Can someone help me setup a mail server?

Hi guys,

I have some free time on my hand so I'm trying different stuff out, yesterday I created a secure FTP server...and today I would like to create an email server... it's just a test so nothing big just a hanful of users and I would like to be able to access it via the web also... I'm running under Windows XP and Linux Ubuntu 7.10... Could anyone help me with a tutorial for both OS... Another question is do you have to have your own DNS or website... since it's just a test.. any free alternatives?
