Default Starting to do website development need some basic help/ideas!!???

I just bought my own domain address and hosting service, I want to start dabbling with developing web pages. I have a IT background just want to try and do some stuff on the side in my own time. I was thinking about buying some software like Dreamweaver or Adobe's packages but do I really need it? What tools, languages, software could I use for free? Also, I just want to make my site a blog for me what could I use. The goal is to build up a portfolio and create sites for peoples use. Help!!!

Its very unlikely you will get hired for a professional job and make big bucks unless you have artistic talent, and more than just simple html knowledge. Many people want websites that are dynamic that use php, mysql, cgi, and/or flash so it is ideal to learn these as well if you are considering to get anywhere. Most people take college courses to do tasks like these and it isn't easy work. There is also TONS of competition in the web design field with thousands of freelancers looking for jobs and companies that have people hired in india working for half the wages that Americans make and putting out 3x the work. The most you can do to succeed in the field is to create marvelous designed websites and exquisite artistic abilities. I would also recommend learning how to use and work photoshop and pick up some books that teach you how to draw and design web pages. Good luck!

if you are really knowledgeable. then first create a smart portfolio of your designs. then approach some one for work. coz whenever you will approach someone they will be asking for your previous work experience. this is the first step
